League rules

Championship Seven game rules for players, families, coaches, and referees.

5v5 & 7v7 scrimmages

From October 2, two 20-minute halves with a 2-minute halftime. Kickoffs are 6:45, 7:30, 8:30 and 9:15 PM Central. Field reservations include changeover and end at the next kickoff, or 10 PM after the last round. A referee is included for confirmed scrimmages. The surface is turf; cleats and turf shoes are allowed.

7v7 uses the rules below. In 5v5, each team fields five players including the goalkeeper, and kick-ins replace throw-ins. The goal-lead rule removes one or two players: 4v5 at a three-goal lead and 3v5 at a five-goal lead. The minimum for 5v5 is three players. All other rules remain the same.

  • 7v7, including goalkeeper.
  • Standard soccer rules apply unless modified below.
  • Offside is enforced. For younger divisions, referees should focus on clear and obvious offside violations rather than marginal positioning.
  • No intentional heading. Intentional headers result in an indirect free kick for the opposing team.
  • All other fouls are direct free kicks unless standard soccer rules designate the offense as indirect.
  • Standard throw-in rules apply. A goal cannot be scored directly from a throw-in. If the ball touches any player before entering the goal, the goal counts.
  • Standard goal kick and corner kick rules apply.
  • Standard goalkeeper rules apply.
  • Unlimited substitutions at any stoppage with referee permission.
  • No ties. If tied at the end of regulation, the game immediately goes to penalty kicks.
  • Penalty shootout: 3 kicks per team, alternating. If still tied after 3 kicks each, continue sudden death until one team scores and the other misses.
  • First caution: warning or yellow card.
  • Second caution to the same player: the player sits out for 2 minutes and the team plays short during that time. After 2 minutes, the player may return or be substituted.
  • Serious foul play, violent conduct, abusive behavior, or similar serious misconduct results in ejection for the remainder of the match.
  • If a team leads by 3 goals, the leading team removes 1 player and plays 6v7.
  • If a team leads by 5 goals, the leading team removes a second player and plays 5v7.
  • If the lead drops below 5 goals, one player may return. If the lead drops below 3 goals, the other player may return.
  • Minimum of 5 players required to start or continue a match unless approved by tournament staff.
